Surgical Pathology at Physicians Laboratory

SURGICAL PATHOLOGY    Jenny_surgical2.jpg

The pathologists at Physicians Laboratory have a wide range of expertise in pathology and laboratory medicine.  All are AP/CP trained and board certified with subspecialty fellowship training in surgical pathology, hematopathology (see below), dermatopathology, cytopathology, and transfusion medicine.  We provide medical laboratory directors and consultants to a large number of different sized hospitals and clinics in the four state area.

Physicians Laboratory utilizies a same day histology processing technology (Express), provided by Avera McKennan Histology Laboratory and directed by our pathologists, on about 50% of all surgical cases and almost all small tissue biopsies.  This approach gives us the ability to read out cases within hours of processing (e.g. specimens received in the laboratory by noon will be ready for our pathologists to read out that same afternoon).

We provide online access to a Referral Guide to all Physicians Laboratory clients via this website.  Detailed specimen submission requirements are listed in the guide.  Please refer to the guide before submitting specimens to the laboratory if there is any question about performing a specific test.  Or call our Client Services department at 605-322-7212.  Your patient's care is always of utmost importance to us and proper specimen preparation is key to rendering a timely diagnosis.

Physicians Laboratory has two onsite hematopathologists available to interpret bone marrow specimens.  Additional testing is often employed, including flow cytometry and molecular studies.  We strive to render diagnoses that are as specific as possible in order to allow our physicians the ability to offer their patients targeted treatmemjbleile.jpgnts.  12_Assen_Garth_18 Medium Web view.jpg
