QUALITY AUTOPSY EXAMINATIONS

Physicians Laboratory pathologists perform only non-forensic autopsies.Jenny_autopsy.jpg

Autopsy scheduling requests may be called to PL Client Services at 1-605-322-7212. After hours calls will be directed by the answering service.  Following scheduling, notify the funeral home of choice to transport the body to Avera McKennan Hospital (follow your in-house protocol).  Request for Autopsy and Consent for Autopsy forms to be downloaded and printed may be found under the Documents tab - Instruction and Consent Forms.

Autopsies at PL of NWIA in Spencer will generally be handled by the pathologist who is based there.  Upon her absence however, the body will need to be transported to Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls.  The person transporting the body will need to coordinate with Avera McKennan security prior to arrival.  Their number is 605-322-7490.
Security will direct them where to go and escort them to the morgue.
Also, PL Client Services will need to be notified at 605-322-7212 so that the pathologist or PA on call will know there is a body coming for autopsy.

The body must be accompanied by:

  • I.D. wrist band or I.D. tag on the great toe or other written identification attached to the body
  • Consent for Autopsy
  • Request for Autopsy
  • Original or copy of pertinent medical records
  • Relevant history
  • Request for special studies

A verbal preliminary report will be given in two working days. A final written report will follow.
